SBI
Description
The Sexual Behavior Inventory (SBI) was developed for a study conducted in the NIDA Clinical Trials Network entitled 'Safer Sex for Men' (2002-2006). The SBI was administered to study participants using Audio Computer Assisted Self-Interviewing technology (ACASI) in order to encourage participant disclosure of sensitive information. The SBI collects lifetime and past 90 day sexual activity with partners of either gender, of a variety of sexual activity, and of activity involving combined sex and drugs.

SERBAS
Description

This scale is used to ascertain the number of unprotected vaginal and anal intercourse occasions (i.e. without condom use) by partner type (main versus non-main partners), number of partners, and gender of partners for the 3 months prior to each assessment, using timeline-followback type cues for recall. The SERBAS is a widely used sexual risk behavior assessment with good evidence of reliability and validity among both injection drug users and women at high risk for HIV, among other groups.

SRDS
Description
The Self-Report Delinquency Scale (Elliot et al., 1983) will be used in testing Hypothesis 2b. This Scale consists of 23 items from the National Youth Survey (Huizinga & Elliot, 1983). Items assess adolescent criminal behavior on five subscales: 1) Total Delinquency, 2) General Theft, 3) Crimes Against Persons, 4) Index Offenses, and 5) Drug Scales. The instrument is well validated and has been used extensively in prior research.

SEF
Description
Self-Efficacy (SEF) for engaging in safer drug and sex behaviors is measured using a modified version of the Cooperative Agreement “RBA Behaviors and Beliefs Trailer” developed by Rhodes (1998). It assesses the degree to which individuals feel confident that they can perform safer drug and sex behaviors when faced with risky situations. As such, it evaluates the effectiveness of the C & E intervention in teaching protective measures.

KSADS
Description

The K-SADS-PL is a semi-structured diagnostic interview designed to assess current and past episodes of psychopathology in children and adolescents ages 6-18 according to DSM-III-R and DSM-IV criteria. It is clinician-friendly. Probes and objective criteria are provided to rate individual symptoms. It assesses a variety of diagnoses, including major depression, schizophrenia, agoraphobia, ADHD, and eating disorders. Additionally, the instrument has three sections pertaining to substance abuse (cigarette use, alcohol abuse, and substance abuse in general), as well as a supplement (supplement #5) that addresses current and past Substance Abuse. Other diagnostic supplement modules cover Affective Disorders, Psychotic Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, and Behavioral Disorders including bulimia, anorexia nervosa, and tic disorders. Its strength is in diagnosis of affective and anxiety disorders. As a semi-structured interview, the questions included in the instrument do not have to be recited verbatim but instead are meant to serve as prompts to the interviewer. The K-SADS-PL is administered by interviewing the parent(s) and the child involved, and then finally achieving summary ratings which include all sources of information (parent, child, school, chart and other). Administration time is estimated to be 35-45 minutes each for healthy control subjects and about 75 minutes each for psychiatric patients. For research studies, a single diagnostic module of the K-SADS may be used for multiple interviews of a patient during treatment to assess symptom change.

Risk Behavior Survey

Submitted by administrator on
Abbreviation
RBS
Description
The RBS is a brief interviewer administered HIV risk assessment that is used to determine the risk at which the participant puts herself for contracting HIV through their drug and sexual behaviors over the last thirty days. It is an abbreviated version of the Risk Behavior Assessment originally developed as part of a NIDA Cooperative Agreement. The RBS collects information on drug use; drug injecting; sexual activity; condom use; exchange of sex for drugs, money or both; and HIV-test history. The RBS takes 6-10 minutes to complete. HIV risk behaviors in the areas of drug use and sex in the previous 30 days are measured. Reliability and validity assessments of the RBS support its adequacy as a research tool for populations of drug users (Needle et al., 1995; Weatherby et al., 1994).
